I was struck by a thought as I incorporated today’s picture into my photo library. As I write this I see literally hundreds of events and thousands of faces going back multiple generations. Each picture tells a story, many times the importance of elements in the picture are lost on the viewer. A house, a room or a favored piece of furniture, even a yard. For people in the picture, these elements are part of their life’s experience in ways that a viewer can never understand. This makes me think of my own pictures.
What is the intrinsic value of a picture? So much about a picture is what is brought to it by the viewer. No matter how objective we think a picture is, it is still as subjective as any other piece of art. Want proof, just examine the number of theories surrounding the Zapruder Film and you will know what I’m talking about.
All this has caused me to think about my pictures a little differently. How much will I consider the viewer and what they bring to any picture I take? Something to think about, that’s for sure.
